Dr. Mensa Otabil, founder and General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), led a solemn moment of national prayer during Day Three of the 2025 Greater Works Conference in Accra. His intercession came in response to the tragic Ghana Air Force helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two government ministers and three military personnel.
Speaking to thousands of congregants at Christ Temple East in Teshie, Dr. Otabil expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a national wound that has left families shattered. He reminded the congregation that while the tragedy affects the entire country, its impact is most devastating for the loved ones left behind.
“This morning, some very important Ghanaians lost their lives,” he said. “They woke up just to do their work, to go through their duty… but they went and sadly lost their lives. Today, there is crying and weeping in many homes.”
He called on the church to pray for the wives, children, parents, and siblings of the deceased, asking the Holy Spirit to enter their homes and bring comfort. “Wives have lost their husbands, children their fathers, and siblings their brothers… May the Holy Spirit enter their homes, enter their living rooms, enter their hearts, and breathe life into families that are devastated,” he prayed.
Among the victims were Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three Ghana Armed Forces crew members.
Dr. Otabil’s prayer resonated deeply with many, offering spiritual solace in a time of national grief. His words reinforced the role of faith and community in navigating moments of profound loss and reminded the nation of the enduring power of prayer and compassion.
As Ghana continues to mourn, tributes have poured in from across the country and beyond. The government has ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast, and investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
