Breaking – Defence Minister and Seven Others Perish in Military Helicopter Crash

Ghana has been plunged into mourning following a devastating military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight distinguished individuals, including two government ministers and three Ghana Armed Forces crew members.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday morning, when a Z-9 Ghana Air Force helicopter en route to Obuasi lost radar contact shortly after departing Accra at 9:12 a.m. Moments later, the aircraft reportedly burst into flames upon impact, leaving several victims burnt beyond recognition.

Among the deceased are Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and three crew members of the Ghana Armed Forces. These officials were traveling to launch the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP)—a national initiative aimed at promoting sustainable mining and vocational empowerment.

In a solemn press briefing, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah confirmed the incident and announced that national flags will fly at half-mast to honor the fallen. The government has launched a full-scale investigation, with early speculation pointing to technical failure or adverse weather conditions as possible causes.

This tragedy marks one of the most significant losses of high-ranking officials in Ghana’s recent history. It is not only a blow to national leadership but also a heartbreaking reminder of the risks faced by those who serve. As the country grapples with this loss, tributes continue to pour in from citizens, political leaders, and international partners.
